Start With the Spot You Notice
Before adding something new, look at the place it will occupy. Note the width of the surface, the colors nearby, and what you see when you enter the room. A lamp needs room beside the objects you already use. A clock should sit where its face is visible from your usual seat. Pillows can repeat a color from across the room. Choosing around a particular spot gives each addition a clear relationship to the furniture and details that are already there.
